Feral Swine Program

Protecting Guam’s Agriculture and Ecosystems

The Southern Guam Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is tackling one of Guam’s most pressing challenges—feral swine management. Through the Feral Swine Program, we work with local farmers, ranchers, and landowners to mitigate the damage caused by these invasive animals. By providing resources like perimeter fencing, innovative trapping solutions, and community education, we help protect Guam’s agriculture, natural resources, and rural livelihoods.

Why Feral Swine Management Matters

Feral swine pose significant threats to Guam’s agricultural and natural landscapes:

  • Crop Damage: Feral swine uproot crops and destroy farmland, causing financial losses for farmers.
  • Soil Erosion: Their destructive behavior disrupts soil structure, leading to erosion and water quality issues.
  • Ecosystem Disruption: These invasive animals threaten native species and disrupt Guam’s delicate ecosystems.

What We Offer

Our program provides farmers and landowners with the tools and support needed to address feral swine challenges effectively:

  • Perimeter Fencing: We offer cost-effective fencing solutions designed to protect crops and property from feral swine intrusion.
  • Pig Brig Feasibility Study: Southern SWCD is currently piloting the Pig Brig trapping system in partnership with local farmers to evaluate its effectiveness in capturing and managing feral swine. This study explores innovative, humane solutions to mitigate feral swine damage.
  • USDA APHIS Wildlife Services Partnership: Our collaboration with USDA APHIS Wildlife Services strengthens feral swine management efforts across Guam. This partnership brings technical expertise and additional resources to implement comprehensive solutions that protect Guam’s agricultural and natural resources.
  • Education and Outreach: Through workshops and community events, we share best practices for feral swine management and control.

If you’re a farmer, rancher, or landowner affected by feral swine, the Southern SWCD is here to help. Our program provides free consultations and resources to get you started on effective feral swine management.
