The Southern District is proud to lead the SWCD Readiness and Environmental Preparedness Initiative (REPI), a program designed to address environmental challenges, strengthen agricultural and community resilience, and protect Guam’s natural resources. By fostering partnerships and implementing targeted strategies, the SWCD REPI initiative ensures Guam is prepared to face environmental and land-use challenges while promoting sustainable practices.
What is REPI?
REPI is a national program supported by the Department of Defense (DoD) to promote compatibility between military readiness and environmental sustainability. The Southern Districts SWCD’s REPI efforts focus on:
- Preserving Guam’s agricultural landscapes.
- Addressing invasive species and pest management.
- Enhancing conservation efforts to support long-term land sustainability.
Key REPI Initiatives in Southern Guam
Guahan Sentinel Landscapes Partnership
Southern Guam SWCD collaborates with federal, state, and local stakeholders through the Guahan Sentinel Landscapes Partnership (GSLP). This initiative focuses on creating resilient landscapes that protect Guam’s natural resources while supporting agricultural productivity. By aligning conservation efforts, the partnership ensures a coordinated approach to addressing Guam’s environmental challenges.
Coordinating Conservation Efforts with GSLP
Southern SWCD works closely with the Guahan Sentinel Landscapes Partnership to tackle conservation challenges across Guam. This initiative ensures that local priorities are addressed through effective collaboration, leveraging the expertise and resources of multiple partners to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Establishing a Private Landowner and Agricultural Producer Network
To enhance conservation on private lands, Southern SWCD is building a network of landowners and agricultural producers. This initiative fosters collaboration, encourages participation in conservation programs, and provides landowners with access to resources and technical assistance to improve land management practices.
Addressing Guam’s Invasive Species Challenges
Invasive species pose significant threats to Guam’s ecosystems and agriculture. Southern SWCD is leading efforts to implement strategies that:
